There seems to be a bit of confusion out there as to exactly how far a marathon is. I'm running a marathon three weeks from tomorrow and I'd like to work to educate everyone around me because this is driving me nuts. I've had several conversations lately that have gone one of these two ways:
Other person I haven't seen for a while: what have you been up to?
Me: I'm training for a marathon.
OPIHSFAW: wow! Good for you! My (some relative/friend/coworker) ran one this summer. I think it was 5 miles. How far is your marathon?
Someone who knows full well I'm running a marathon in a few weeks: How far are you running this weekend?
SWKFWIRAMIAFW: (incredulously) MILES!?!?
Me: . . . Sigh.
So. . . For the record. A marathon is 26.2 miles. Always. Anything else has another name. Period. And also for the record. . . This is not just something that runners know.
